Serving in and with our communities is an integral part of the mission of the field of Asian American Studies. ASAM majors complete a Community Research/Engagement Requirement that involves either taking a service-learning course, ASAM 230-Civic Engagement Through AAPI Studies, or completing, under the supervision of a faculty member: ASAM 495-Internship in Asian American Studies, ASAM 496-Student-to-Student Tutorial, or ASAM 499-Independent Study. These courses often help students to integrate what they’ve learned in ASAM classes with hands-on experience. Students develop professional and personal skills that enhance their lifelong learning, self-reflection, and career exploration.
According to our Center for Internships & Community Engagement, ASAM 230 is one of the most consistently taught service-learning courses at CSUF. It’s also the first purposefully designed service-learning course to be included in the General Education Program in CSUF history!
Our majors and minors often take ASAM 230, then engage in internships or summer leadership workshops with Community Partners. Three of our alumni have even been hired by our Community Partners after graduation and then supervised our service learners!
Since 2008, our department has been truly privileged to collaborate with the following local community-based organizations to co-create and co-teach ASAM 230:
